چکیده

Hyperaccumulation is an unusual plant response to metaliferous soils. Such soils like those derived from ultramafic rocks, have elevated concentrations of heavy metals, mainly Ni, Cr, Zn and Cd. Most plants growing on these soils exclude metals from their shoots as excessive accumulation of heavy metals is toxic to the majority of plants. However, about 2% of plants growing on metaliferous soils take up and accumulate large quantities of metals in their shoots: a phenomenon known as hyperaccumulation. Senecio coronatus (Thunb) Harv, a widespread South African plant, also occurs on ultramafic outcrops where two genotypes have been identified: a Ni-Hyperaccumulator (H) and a Non-Hyperaccumulator (NH).

Zinc distribution and speciation in roots of various genotypes of tobacco exposed to Zn

Cell walls of roots have a great reactivity towards metals, and may act as a barrier limiting the entry of metals, especially in non-hyperaccumulating species. The aim of this study was to determine the localization and speciation of Zn in roots of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) grown in Zncontaminated substrates. Chemical extractions and EXAFS spectroscopy were applied on whole roots and on isola...

Tissue Fractions of Cadmium in Two Hyperaccumulating Jerusalem Artichoke Genotypes

In order to investigate the mechanisms in two Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) genotypes that hyperaccumulate Cd, a sand-culture experiment was carried out to characterize fractionation of Cd in tissue of Cd-hyperaccumulating genotypes NY2 and NY5. The sequential extractants were: 80% v/v ethanol (FE), deionized water (FW), 1 M NaCl (FNaCl), 2% v/v acetic acid (FAcet), and 0.6 M HC...

Host-herbivore studies of Stenoscepa sp. (Orthoptera: Pyrgomorphidae), a high-Ni herbivore of the South African Ni hyperaccumulator Berkheya coddii (Asteraceae)

Nymphs of Stenoscepa sp. feed on leaves of the Ni hyperaccumulator Berkheya coddii at serpentine sites in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. These sites contain Ni hyperaccumulators, Ni accumulators, and plants with Ni concentrations in the normal range. We conducted studies to: (i) determine the whole-body metal concentration of nymphs (including those starved to empty their guts); (ii) compar...

Elucidating the selenium and arsenic metabolic pathways following exposure to the non-hyperaccumulating Chlorophytum comosum, spider plant

Although many studies have investigated the metabolism of selenium and arsenic in hyperaccumulating plants for phytoremediation purposes, few have explored non-hyperaccumulating plants as a model for general contaminant exposure to plants. In addition, the result of simultaneous supplementation with selenium and arsenic has not been investigated in plants. In this study, Chlorophytum comosum, c...
